On the way to work today I heard a song on the radio that had me reminiscing of younger days. Not in the way you think though, I’m sure. You see, there were a number of songs’ lyrics that I thought sounded different from what they actually were. For example, the song this morning was Tiny Dancer by Elton John. When I was younger, I thought he sang “…hold me closer, Tony Daaaaanza…” The sad thing about it is, I’m not kidding! Guess my brain has always worked in twisted ways. Or take the song, Every Time You Go Away by Hall and Oates. I used to think it said “…every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you…” Or take Invisible Touch by Phil Collins. I thought he said “…she seems to have an invisible talk show…” Don’t ask me why. I just remember these weird songs from when I was a child that made no sense to me at all. The Whitney Houston song Greatest Love of All instead of “…because the greaaatest…love of all…”, I used to think she said “…because of laaatex…”.
This is probably why I don’t understand little kids when they talk. They could say, “I want a cracker.” What I take from it is something like, “I hate a map-maker.” Moms seem to know it all though. Whatever their kids say, they know exactly what it was. “Uaguhaahaieee!” And they know that was code for, “She took my crayon!” Whereas I would be at a total loss and probably go through McDonalds drive-through because I thought they wanted chicken nuggets.
My daughter is finally getting more talkative. There isn’t much you actually can understand still; most of it is just sounds. But at least she’s trying. At school they’ve been really working on “yes” and “no”. So I’ve been pushing that at home. Usually she says “Ummm” for “more”. She uses that EVERY time she wants anything. So lately I’ve been saying, “Do you want more milk?” I get about 55 “Ummms”, each getting louder than the last – like I just can’t hear her and that’s why she’s not getting milk. But finally she says “yeah”. Even yesterday, she was on the potty seat and I said, “All done?” She looked right at me and said, “Done.” I was elated! It’s a work in progress, but oh so worth it!
You I always knew you were my "special" friend but you have taken it to a whole other level..lol! I had somebody correct me on a song I was singing once..it's funny now but I felt like an idiot I was like all these years I thought he was saying "Please bring me my wife" (song is Hotel California) and he said no he's saying "Please bring me my wine" then the song goes "we haven't had that spirit hear since 1963" he was like a spirit is a drink...I was like they haven't had nobody ask for their wife in that long..lol. Oh well I'm a blonde, what do ya want.
ReplyDeleteExcited to hear that about your baby. It's probably easier to let her almost create her own language that you are the only one who know's what she is saying but working with her to actually tell you the correct words is awesome. I know I always get excited when she says something as plain as day...as if to say "don't be looking at me all shocked, I know what I'm doing over here"..lol.
